The Causten family papers, 1805-1820 (bulk 1810-1817).

This collection contains letters written by members of the Causten family of Baltimore, Md., during the period 1805-1820. The correspondence deals with family business matters as well as seafaring life aboard merchant vesssels and ships of the U.S. Navy during the period. Of special interest are the letters written by Joseph Causten while serving on the frigate Constellation under the command of Commodore Stephen Decatur. Included are references to naval actions of the United States in the Mediterranean and the taking of the Turkish ship Meshuda in 1816.

The Causten family owned and operated a merchant house in Baltimore, Md. The father, Isaac, appears to have been a man of many parts. He is listed as a wax-candle manufacturer in The Baltimore directory for 1803, as an innkeeper in The Baltimore directory and citizen's register for 1807, and as an inspector of customs in Matchett's Baltimore director for 1829.
